Instructions to use Quiz Master
-------------------------------
REQUIREMENTS:
IBM PC/XT/AT or compatibles or any of the IBM PS2 line of computers.
Quiz Master Construction Set PC will run on any color or monochrome
monitor. The screen is set for 80 characters.
LOADING:
You should first format a blank disk and copy the original program
disk and then store it in a safe place, using your back-up as your
working disk.
The program is NOT copy protected. If you have a hard disk, insert
the program disk in the 'A' drive and type in 'INSTALL.' All the
necessary files will be copied to the directory 'QM.' When in your
directory 'QM', type in 'QUIZM' and the program will load.
If you wish to use only your floppy drive, insert the program disk in
your 'A' drive and type 'QUIZM' and the program will load itself.
MAIN MENU
The Main Menu consists of six options. You may type in 'G' to play the
game, or 'C' to create a new data base or add to an existing data
base, or 'P' to print your quiz. You may view your Disk Directory by
typing a 'D.' This will allow you to view the names of your data files.
If you have the capabilities to Screen Print, then do so. Otherwise,
write down the names of your files so that when you come to that
point in the program when you are requested to type in the name, you
will have it ready. To change screen colors, type 'S'. Type 'F' to
cycle the text colors and 'B' to cycle the backgound colors. Press
ENTER when you have select a pleasing combination. Type either 'S' to
save the new colors or 'E' to EXIT without saving. To exit the Main
Menu, type a 'Q'.
GAME MENU:
If you wish to play the game, type in the 'G.'
You will next be given the opportunity to choose whether or not you
wish to see the correct answer highlighted if you select the incorrect
one. Press the 'Y' key if you want to see the correct answer. Press
'N' to turn this option off. If you have selected to see the correct
answer highlighted, when you choose an incorrect one, the corresponding
number will alternately flash on and off to indicate that this is the
correct answer.
You will then be requested to type in a data file name to load. If you
wish to view the Disk Directory, type in the word 'DIR' and press
'ENTER', or you may type in an 'X' to exit this screen. If you wish to
use the existing sample file, and you are just using the program disk
as it came, you would type in 'A:GEOGRAPH.'
The sample data file would then load and your first question, chosen
at random from the data file would show on the screen.
Read the question and then type in the correct number corresponding
with the answer. If you have chosen correctly, the 'SCORE' would
respond by updating the 'RIGHT' answer. If you had chosen incorrectly,
the 'WRONG' answer number would be updated. In this way, you may keep
a running tally of your choices.
To continue to the next question, type in a 'C.' At any time, after you
have answered the question, you may alternately select the 'E' and the
Main Screen will appear.
At the end of your quiz, you will given the opportunity to print your
SCORE and the incorrectly selected questions together with their
correct answers. You may choose to print these to the <S>creen or to
a <P>rinter for a hard copy.
CREATE MENU:
From this screen, you have three choices: You may choose 'C' to
either create a new quiz or add to an existing quiz. If you choose 'E'
you may only edit an existing quiz. You may also select 'Q' and be
sent back to the Main Menu.
If you choose 'C' then you will be asked to type in the name of the
quiz. Use either the drive 'A:' or 'B:' to precede the name of the quiz.
You are only allowed up to eight characters for the file name. The
sample 'A:GEOGRAPH' on the program disk shows how this is done.
In all cases, you will be given the opportunity to view the Disk
Directory by typing in the word 'DIR' and then pressing 'ENTER', or you
may type in an 'X' to exit this screen.
After you type in the file name of the quiz, you will be prompted to
choose if it is an existing quiz (OLD) of a new quiz (NEW). If the quiz
already exists on the disk, type in an 'O.' If it is a new quiz, type in
a 'N.'
If you are creating a new quiz, you 'Create/Edit Screen' will be brought
up and you will be positioned to begin typing in you first question.
You have 120 characters for your question, divided into 60 characters
for each line (A) and (B). Each answer has up to 60 characters.
Lastly, type in the correct number that corresponds to the answer.
If you are adding to an existing quiz, the data file will load and you
will be positioned at the next available question.
In all cases, the 'Record Number' will indicate how many questions you
have in the data file. There is a maximum of 100 per file.
To continue on to the next question (after you have reviewed your
work and can see no typing errors, etc.), type in a 'C'. If you notice
anything amiss, type in an 'E' and you will be able to select any line
to edit. Choose 'Q' to edit the Question, '1' through '4' for any of the
Answers, and 'C' for the Correct Answer. You must type the whole line
again as it should be for that part to be saved correctly.
When you are finished, type in 'S' and your work will be written to the
disk. If you do not wish to save your quiz, then type 'X' and you will
exit this screen without saving the work you have done.
EDIT MENU:
When you choose this option, you will be asked to type in the file name
of your existing quiz.
If you have forgotten the name of your quiz, just type in the word
'DIR' and then press 'ENTER', or you may type in an 'X' to exit this
screen. You will be allowed to view what is on your disk. Either Print
Screen what is on the screen, or write down the name(s) of your data
files.
After it is loaded, you will be presented with your first quiz on the
screen.
You may scroll forward or backward through your quiz and make as many
changes as you wish, or if you want to delete one of the question, you
may do so.
To edit a question, type in an 'E'. To change just the Question, type
in a 'Q'. Since the Question can be on two lines, you must press the
'ENTER' key at the end of each line. To change any of the Answers,
type in a number from '1' to '4.' To change the Correct Answer, type in
a 'C.'
To delete a question, type in a 'D'. The way the program works, is
that the correct answer will be replaced by an 'X'. The program knows
that when it writes it back out to disk, it will ignore all those
questions with an 'X' in that position. So, if you choose to delete a
question and then change your mind, simply scroll forward or backward
until you find the question and 'un-delete' it by typing in the correct
number corresponding to the answer.
When you are finished, type in 'S' and your quiz will be saved to disk.
If you do not wish to save your altered quiz, enter 'X' and you will
exit this screen without saving the work you have done.
PRINT MENU:
You have four choices: You can choose 'A' to print your entire data
file sequentially. Or, you can choose 'R' to print your entire data file
randomly. If you only want a selected number sequentially, choose the
'S' option. And finally, if you want a selected number to print
randomly, choose the 'L' from the menu.
In all cases, you will be asked for the data file name to be read from
the disk. You may type in 'DIR' and press 'ENTER' to view the files on
the disk, or type in an 'X' to exit this screen.
In the cases where you want only a selected number, you will be
prompted to input the number.
In all cases, you will be asked to type in the title of your quiz. This
will appear at the top of each page printed.
FINALLY:
We here at EZuse Software hope that this program will be an
educational tool to be used by students and teachers as well.
Any question or comments will be appreciated.
